Cameron House Community Education Centre

Cameron House is a vibrant successful Community Education Centre for people of all ages. Over 1000 people, mainly local and of all ages, use the Centre every week. The current building, just off Cameron House Avenue, is badly in need of replacement.

LATEST NEWS
the Council has agreed to fund the building of a new centre but have yet to decide on the exact figure. A survey of the preferred site (part of the park nearest Prestonfield Avenue) has been undertaken. I have written to the Department responsible requesting a definite date for confirmation of the budget.

The next stage will be a public consultation on the design and the submission of a planning application. It is anticipated the plans will have to go to the Scottish Executive (as the land belongs to the Council).

20 mph Zone and Prestonfield Bus gate

20mph Zone

The next few weeks will see a fair amount of disruption for local traffic and residents as work gets underway on the 20mph Zone around Prestonfield Primary School. The work is a necessary part of setting up the 20mph zone and will involve putting in speed cushions (bumps!) and signage.

Bus gate

Local residents and I recently carried out a survey of the vehicles using the bus gate. Each morning for a week we counted the number of unauthorised vehicles using the gate. The good news is that there were only 8 vehicles during the morning peak, 8am til 9. a lot less than we had expected. The Council conducted a similar survey during both the morning and evening peak in February. They found there were one or two more cars using the gate in the evening, 4.30 to 5.30pm.

The vehicle registration numbers from our survey have been sent to the Police along with a request from myself and the Council that they monitor the gate more regularly.

Newington Shops

The shops were badly hit by the gas mains work at the end of last year. I've lobbied the council to help the local shopkeepers and they've agreed to pay for a local A to Z of shops and businesses which should be delivered to local residents inthe next month or so.

Rented Accommodation

As of April all rented accommodation (not just HMOs) will have to be registered with the local Council. The fee to register is £55 per landlord plus £11 for each additional property. The registration scheme has been devised by the Scottish Parliament to crack down on rogue landlords who do not manage their property properly. If you need more information contact the Council (www.edinburgh.gov.uk/letwise or check out the Scottish Exec website www.landlordregistrationscotland.gov.uk)
